GINGER Hosts BGE Data Training in Nairobi, Kenya – August 2025

From August 5–10, 2025, the GINGER program convened current GINGER Fellows and alumni, as well as NeuroMEX early-career researchers, in Nairobi, Kenya, for an intensive weeklong Blended Genome–Exome (BGE) Data Training. The training was designed to strengthen participants’ technical expertise in genomic data processing, analysis, and quality control for BGE data.

The program opened with an overview of data types and project-specific resources, including sessions on NeuroGAP and NeuroMEX datasets. Participants engaged in practical, hands-on instruction covering data quality control, imputation, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), rare variant association studies (RVAS), and polygenic risk score (PRS) analyses. The sessions emphasized both conceptual understanding and applied skills using real data pipelines and cloud-based tools.

In addition to technical modules, the training incorporated discussions on Google Cloud cost management, statistical power, and strategic approaches to paper preparation. Fellows collaborated with members of the Stanley Center training team during a hybrid Joint Paper and Strategic Planning session.

Participants also took part in field visits to Aga Khan University and Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital, deepening their understanding of local research infrastructure and clinical contexts.

The BGE Data Training highlighted GINGER’s commitment to advancing analytic capacity, fostering collaboration, and preparing Fellows and alumni to lead large-scale genomic research efforts across Africa and Latin America.
